Her real name is Gwendolyn Poole, but when a costume designer heard “Gwen Poole,” they assumed she wanted a Deadpool-style suit and misheard it as “Gwenpool.” That tiny misunderstanding basically defined her whole look.

What makes her stand out, though, is that she knows she's in a comic book. So she talks to the reader on Earth-1218, breaks the fourth wall, and surprises heroes by already knowing their secret identities. Her biggest power isn't super strength or lasers — it's her comic book knowledge. Gwenpool also has a happy-go-lucky personality and pretty loose morals. Because she believes consequences in a fictional universe don't matter, she sometimes makes questionable choices. But under all that chaos, her story is surprisingly existential: she's a girl trying to find her place in a world where she doesn't quite belong.

One thing that absolutely killed me when I read about it? She and Deadpool aren't really pals. In The Unbelievable Gwenpool #13, when asked about Deadpool, she says she doesn't read him because he's “just a little too ‘LOL memes’” and clutters up pages with speech bubbles. Deadpool, meanwhile, thinks she's an inferior imitation of him. So that Deadpool pin on her Fortnite costume is a little ironic if you know the lore.

Now, heading into 2026, I love that Gwenpool is getting more recognition outside of comics. She's shown up in Marvel Snap, Fortnite, and her pet Jeff the Land Shark has been featured in Marvel Rivals. That tells me players are finally catching on to how weird and lovable she is.

For anyone still on the fence about grabbing her skin in Fortnite, here's my take. Gwenpool isn't a standard superhero, and that's exactly the point.
